Game 7 vs. Interleague?

So tonight is the night that a Stanley Cup Champion will be decided and it is also the night that the Toronto Blue Jays face off against Hanley Ramirez and the Florida Marlins. After about one millisecond of consideration I am going to find myself sitting upper deck enjoying the Doc show the NL what the best pitcher in the AL is all about. I know a lot of people hate interleague baseball and think it is a pointless cash grab, but I personally LOVE it! I think interleague brings a new sense of excitement to the game and I can't wait to see the starting rotation swing the bat once the Jays hit the road for some more interleague action.

As for tonight's Stanley Cup final, I don't really have a preference when it comes to who takes home the hardware. I am just excited to see the season come to an end because there is nothing worse then having to sit through 27 minutes of hockey analysis before I can see some baseball highlights on tsn. I know I am a Canadian and stereotypically I am suppose to love hockey but enough is enough it is June and the last thing i care about is ice or hockey.

After a short hiatus (which felt like it lasted an eternity) I am back to blogging. Who would have thought becoming a scooter owner would be such a long and painful process. I have spent about 2 hours every other day at a government office dealing with this thing, taking written licensing tests, vehicle safety certifications, ownership transfers and so on. Either way Marco Scooter-OH! (named after Blue Jays SS Marco Scutaro) is mine and I will be tearing up the streets of Toronto on my mean 49cc muscle machine (in a month, after I finish my on bike safety course and get insurance.)

To all those that are expecting packages from me I will be sending them out ASAP. And to a couple of you guys I had packages returned to me so I will have to resend them out as well.

My Fiance LOVES Baseball? & Dexter Fowler?

My Fiance is quickly becoming a baseball fanatic. She has always been a casual fan who would join me at home games to take in some sun, watch the game and more so people watch. But this season she is all about the ball. She recently bought her first Jays jersey ( a powder blue flashback jersey), an official team hat and she can wax poetic about peoples numbers and standings.

No matter how much she loves the Jays she has a newly found soft spot for the Rockies CF Dexter Fowler. Her love for Dexter started after a weekend road trip to PNC park to see the Pirates vs. Rockies. Dexter was her first ever auto and he was nice enough to stand around and chat. She has even taken it upon herself to start collecting Fowler cards (and by collect I mean whenever I pull a Fowler card regardless of if I need it for a set it is hers. She nows has 2). If anyone has any Dexter Fowler cards, base or insert that they would like to trade please email me and let me know.

What a great day, the Jays snap a nine game , three series losing streak at home against the man who started it all, Tim Wakefeild. The game was phenomenal, and 32,900 fans cheered the Birds to victory. It is nice to know that a nine game losing skid only dropped them one game back of first in the AL east.

Just when I thought today couldn't get any better in regards to baseball there was a package tucked away nicely in my mail box. A very special thank you to John over at Natscards, for this amazing selection of Jays cards, many of them greats from back in the glory days.

A very special thanks to Tribecards for bringing this Blue Jays fan out of the dumps. There is nothing better then coming home and finding an unexpected box of Blue Jays cards tucked away in the mail box. These cards are fantastic they are from the 70's, 80's,90's and 00's. All the great Jays are in there, Mookie Wilson, Alfredo Griffin, Joe Carter and did I mention Mookie Wilson. A very BIG thank you goes out to Tribe cards because these cards helped me forget about the fact that the Jays have lost 9 straight and were swept in 3 back to back to back series.

I have been on a bit of a Jose Canseco kick. In the past week I have read both of his books Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball got Big. The minute I finished that book I immediately went to the local bookstore and picked up Vindicated his follow up to Juiced. Both books were interesting reads. I would recommend them for anyone who wants to gain a little more insight on the Godfather of steroids. My personal favorite part of Juiced is when he goes into great detail describing his suicide attempt and the gun he just so happened to have in his closet, I think he referred to it as a “Street Sweeper”. As for Vindicated hands down the best part is when he goes on record to say he “F*@cking hates A-rod”.

Jose was a mess but when I was a young, bug eyed baseball fan he was my favorite player. It was like watching Hulk Hogan hit dingers. Pulling a Canseco card from a pack was such a joy, I would show all my friends and try to make them jealous. I was actually in the Skydome the night he hit the upper level blast way back in 1989 (I think it is still the highest/furthest ball hit in the Skydome). I will always have fond memories of Jose even though he soiled the game I love. I don’t agree with what he did but when I was a kid he was amazing, a power house, a real life super-hero.

The Jays are stuck in a bit of a rut, they have been swept in back to back series and are currently on a 7 game losing skid. There is no doubt that this team has talent and when they are hot they are real hot but I personally feel it is about time they shook up the order a little and moved Vernon Wells out of the 4 spot for someone who is a little more constant at the plate, like a Hill or Rolen.

Here's hoping they snap this losing skid and sweep the Red Sox when they return home on Friday.

At the beginning of the Jays/Braves inter-league series I contacted Captain Canuck over at the waxaholic blog to see if he wanted to make a little wager on the series. He was down for the friendly wager and I was more then confidednt that the Blue Jays would come back from the whooping they took from the Bosox to take the series from the Braves...MAN WAS I WRONG! The Jays are down 2-0 in the series and at risk of being swept again. Hopefully the Jays can leave Atlanta with a win.

I have fine tuned my ebay approach and stopped bidding on every card that tickles my fancy. I have decided to approach ebay with a few set rules;

1 - Bid on cards from sets that I will never buy packs of (the packs may be too expensive, not available near me or cards from sets that I have no desire to collect)

2 - Bid on cards that have eluded me (cards from sets that I have completed or near completed and haven't been able to land that one Jays insert)

3 - Always try and sneak in a second card from a seller to cash in on free shipping.

A Weekend FULL of baseball

I arrived home late last night from a phenomenal weekend of baseball. My fiance and I arrived in Pittsburgh early Saturday morning, around 2am, and immediately went to sleep. The next morning we woke up early for a day full of Pittsburgh PA and that is when the abundance of baseball began. I turned on the TV to check the weather and see if there was still a risk of thunder storms and the first thing I saw on TV was the movie Mr.3000 so I left that on while I got ready for a day full of baseball. When I got out of the shower Something About Mary was starting on the TV with the hilarious baseball scene, It seemed everywhere I turned I saw baseball.

After we got ready we decided it was time to go grab some brunch so we left the hotel and went looking for some food. We drove down the street and saw a sign for PA's largest cardshow. I had no idea that this was going on and we just happened to stumble upon it. So obviously we checked out the show.

American card shows are a million times better than anything I have been to in Canada. They had everything there, vintage baseball cards, current baseball cards and everything in between. I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of baseball cards held within the stadiums walls. Walking in I decided that I was only going to pick up the following few items from my want list;

2009 Goudey Blue Jays (since I have no desire collecting the set)

So walking around the show I found a guy selling the Goudey's for 25 cents a card so I snagged most of the Jays. Then I continued walking around and saw the side of a McFarlane Roy Halladay. I quickly walked to that table and also noticed that he had every Blue Jays starting line-up. I was so excited. I went over to ask the guy running the table how much for the Halladay and a few Carter SLU's and he told me " $2.00 for all figures" So I grabbed $20.00 worth of Jays figures and at that point the booth owner informed me that he just bought one of the biggest Blue Jays collection from a private collector in Vermont. It was like the baseball gods were giving me a belated birthday gift. He started pulling out game used bats and game worn hats and telling me about the millions of cards he has back home that he will sell me for cheap. I ended up walking away from that table with 10 figures and a game used Alfredo Griffin bat. I walked around the rest of the show in a bit of a daze and was able to pick up a Scott Rolen Sweet Spot ball auto for cheap. I got everything on my list except for the Halladay patch, which is fine by me because I cleaned up and got a bunch of unsuspected surprises.

After the card show my girlfriend and I had a quick lunch and headed to the stadium to check out PNC Park and watch some batting practice. PNC park is beautiful and the walk across the bridge to the stadium was surreal. The first thing you see when you cross the bridge is a giant Roberto Clemente Statue.

Once in the stadium we were able to catch the end of the Pirates batting practice (since the first half of the practice is for season ticket holders only.) It turns out that Pirates coach Luis Dorante had the hots for my lady because he tossed her a baseball within the first 2 minutes of us sitting around watching practice, he made sure everyone knew it was for her. A few minutes later the Pirates left the field and the Rockies took the stage.

The Rockies were very generous in signing autos. My girlfriend decided she was going to go get a few auto's on the ball she was given with love from Luis Dorante. She was able to get 7 Autos from:

The game was amazing, the atmosphere was contagious, the Nate Mclouth bobblehead was a nice bonus but a 1 hour rain delay had me missing the Skydome. The Pirates ended up winning the game. The next day we went back to the ballpark to watch the Pirates pull off an unbelievable rally having everyone in the line up reach base without a single out.

After the Sunday afternoon spanking the of the Rockies we headed back to Toronto. Full of Pitts-burgera and an unbelievable weekend of all things baseball.

Happy Birthday to me , and my favorite Blue Jay of years past Pat Borders and of the modern era Roy Halladay. I find it funny that my favorite Blue Jay growing up shared the same birthday and when I realized that my favorite current Blue Jay was also born on May 14th I began to get a little creeped out. I wonder if it has something to do with the stars, and the galaxy and all that non-sense but I am pretty sure it has less to do with the cosmic mumbo jumbo and more to do with the fact that they are both all-star caliber players. Regardless of why I like them I would like to take this opportunity to wish them both a very Happy Birthday

Tonight's The Night

Tonight's the night the teacher schools the former student. I have been looking forward to this match up since AJ left for the Yankees, and words can not describe how happy I am that it is happening here in Toronto. This could be the greatest pitching match-up of the year (for me at least). This is the baseball equivalent of Tom Cruise vs Paul Newman in The Colour of Money, or of Obi-won vs. Vader in Star Wars or of any other movie where the teacher squares off against the student.

I can not wait until 7:07 where I can witness in person, what is going to be a pitching showdown.

So my birthday is this Thursday and to celebrate my lovely lady (fiance if you want to be a dick about it) is treating me to a weekend of baseball in Pittsburgh. I have always wanted to watch every major league baseball team play on their home Field and I figure PNC Park is a great place to start, cheap tickets and only a 5 hour drive from Toronto. We leave Friday and are going to take in a game on both the Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we are sitting right behind the first basemen and on Sunday we are going to sit up in the bleachers.

My question to all the card bloggers out there is; Are there any card shops near PNC PARK? and, Are there any amazing card shops in the Pittsburgh area?

EBAY Concerns

I just bought a box of 2008 DONRUSS American II cards off of eBay and I am worried that the box may have been tampered with. I know it isn't out of the ordinary to not get what the amount of auto's or memorabilia cards the box claims, and I am fine with that. The reason why I think the box may have been tampered with is because;

the wrapping on the box seemed a little fishy

I didn't get an auto

and one of the packs tore open insanely easy, like it was held together with white glue.

These packs are so easy to search because they do not include a decoy card so the packs containing auto and memorabilia cards are double the size of a normal pack. I have a feeling that the seller opened the box and removed the large packs and replaced them with packs that clearly did not include an auto or memorabilia.

I am not going to state who the seller is in case I am just being paranoid, but I am wondering if this is a regular occurrence on eBay? Do sellers tamper with "sealed" boxes?

At Monday's extra inning lose to the Indians I decided to pick up an overpriced pack of 2009 Topps series 1 and the polite young sales clerk informed me that if I bought two packs I would get a fancy little 2009 Upper Deck Blue Jays one sheeter, without hesistation I plopped down more money and bought a second overpriced pack of Topps and walked away a very happy man.

When I got back to my seat I tore open both packs and didn't get any Jays but it didn't really matter because I was happy as a pig in you know what because I had this beautiful Jays one sheeter with Cito Gaston front and center.

First Sweep of the Season

The Blue Jays are blowing everyone's minds with their phenomenal start to the season. Everyone placed the Jays as finishing in the bottom of the AL and currently they are sitting number one in the AL East and Number 3 in all of baseball and off to their best start over 27 games since the 1992 season championship team. I know it is a long season and we are only a month in but it is exciting to see a team that you have cheered for in the best of times (92 & 93 seasons) and the worst of times (pretty much every season after that) string together wins and actually produce some offense.

Although I am excited I am a realist and I know that our pitching injuries will come back to haunt us. I have been with this team through thick and thin and even if they don't make it into the playoffs it will be nice to see them finish above 500, and open the critics eyes to the fact that although we are in a tight division we can still give the Yanks and Sox a run for their money!

It has been a long time since I have been able to bust out my baseball broom, and man does it feel good to say we swept a team. Usually we were the ones being swept.

Today I hit "The Worlds Best Card Show" and it was pretty damn good. There were easily 100 or more vendors selling whatever your heart desired, packs, singles, inserts, figures, non-sports cards whatever you collect when it comes to sports they had. I was like a kid in candy store! I went to the card showing knowing that if I didn't limit myself I would break the bank and the lady would never let me hear the end of it. So I brought $100.00 (Canadian) and refused to allow myself to go a penny over. Here are a few of the things I walked away with:

So today I received a package in the mail from Spiff and I bet you can guess what it included...BLUE JAYS CARD!!! And not just any Blue Jays cards but cards from current Jays and past greats. I especially like the back of the 1994 Pacific - Juan Guzman, I think I can see my reflection in his Jerry curls.

Cards I may have to buy off ebay

So I was searching ebay for cards of my favorite player, the one the only ROY HALADAY and I found a few that I would really like to see in my collection. My only problem with ebay is that it eliminates the sheer joy of ripping open a pack of cards and stumbling across a card of your favorite player. I know the new shift in card collecting has been towards inserts (understandably so) but a base card of a player I like beats the feeling of getting an insert of a player I don't mind.

I have yet to feel the joy of opening a pack and finding an insert of my favorite player Roy Halladay. I would really like to one day stumple across a Roy insert, I would probably get excited and giddy like an 8 year old boy again.

So here are a few Roy Halladay cards found on ebay that I wish I opened and may feel forced to buy off ebay one day.

2009 Topps Finest Case Break

So I just found out how I fared in JoeCollectors 2009 Topps Finest case break and I am pretty happy with the results. Not only did I get an Auto but I also walk away with a patch. No Jays in this break but here's hoping a few trades pan out and I can land myself a Travis Snider patch redemption or even a Halladay or Wells refractor.

I didn't end up winning the Roy Halladay - By The Letter Card off of ebay, the price jumped a little too far out of my price range. So instead of wallowing in my ebay emptiness, I decided to hit the card shop and buy a pack to forget my loss. 2008 SP AUTHENTIC By The Letter/Auto

I was searching ebay eagerly awaiting the start of the Jays game (rain delay at U.S Cellular field) and I came across a card that I would really like to add to my collection, dare I even say I must have in my collection. It is a Roy Halladay, SP Authentic, by the letter, Auto, out of 15, but what I find odd about this card is the fact that it is a signed "E", there in no "E" in the word HALLADAY, sure there is a "E" in Blue Jays, but the front of the Jays jersey's says "Toronto" or simply "Jays". So where does the letter "E" come from?

Either way this card is stunning and unbelievable, should I cave and buy it off ebay, should I look for someone in the blogosphere to trade with or should I continue to buy SP packs in hopes of getting one for myself. What should I do?

Today I went into the cardshop and picked up a two dollar pack of cards and was pleasantly surprised. Usually when you go into a store with a ridiculously low budget of $2.00 taxes included, you leave disappointed, but today I left blown away and wanting more. I think I found a set I would like to complete. Everything about these cards I liked, from the picture quality to the inserts everything was visually pleasing. If anyone can suggest other sets that I may have missed out on during my 10 years absence from collecting I would greatly appreciate it.

Today`s edition of Mail Box Treasures comes courtesy of Captain Canuck the Waxaholic. . Toronto Raptors - Bosh Signatures

I know this is a blog dedicated to the Toronto Blue Jays, but I figured I would show some love for my second favorite team in all of sports, the Toronto Raptors. I have been a Raptors fan since day one and have been with the team during all their highs and lows, and this season was somewhere in the middle. Currently in Toronto, Raptor rumours are running wild, and everyone is spculating that the teams All-Star player Chris Bosh will be gone after the 2010 season. I try not to buy into the gossip because it would be terrible to see the most exciting player the team has had since the Carter days play for another team.

Instead of dwelling in the if`s and but`s of CB4`s future with the team I decided to share my newly signed Bosh cards & jersey (Bosh stopped by my work a few times this season and I couldn`t help myself)

Lyle Overbay Bobblehead Day

Today was Lyle Overbay bobblehead day at the SKYDOME (or Rogers Center if you want to be a dick about it) and it couldn't have landed on a better day of the year. Yesterday afternoon Lyle was the hero winning the game in extra innings and today he was honored with the first real promotional give away of the season, his very own bobblehead. This bobblehead is a nice little piece of bluejayana showing Lyle rocking the Jays vintage baby blues, but the bobblehead doesn't really look anything like him and he is wearing the number 17, which clearly isn't his number this season. Either way bobblehead day brought in 23,000 fans to see the jays win a 1-0 pitching battle against the A's, and bringing thier season record to 10-4!

Also at the SKYDOME I picked up a $1.50 team set, which I enjoyed. The set is from the 1997 Pacific Collection which looks pretty good for a set of cards that are over 10 years old. When I opened the pack to read the stats on the back of the cards I was pleasantly surprised to find out that all of the cards are in Spanish, so I have no idea what they say!

Flashback Friday: The Kelly Gruber Edition

Every Friday night how game at the SKYDOME (or Rogers Center if you want to be a dick about it) the Blue Jays host Flashback Friday's. Flashback Friday games are a fun time where the Blue Jays wear retro jersey's and honor a Jays great from yester-year. Tonight they honored my childhood hero Kelly Gruber.

Here is a short list of Kelly's accomplishments:

On April 16th, 1989, Kelly Gruber was the first Blue Jay in history to hit for the cycle when he went 4 for 6 with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored
Kelly had his best season in 1990, hitting .274 with 31 HRs, 118 RBIs and 14 SBs, winning Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards and ending up fourth in MVP balloting that year.

I picked up my very first pack of 2009 Upper Deck SPX Baseball cards. And I am pleased to say that I like what I see. Although I didn't get any Blue Jays in this pack I am still impressed:

Back when the Blue Jays were chasing pennants, winning rings and bringing in over 15,000 fans to a home game, their glorious field was called the SKYDOME. Today that very same building has a much less enticing name, “The Rogers Center”, named after Ted Rogers, one of the richest men in Canada (who rips me off monthly on my wireless bill).

To the Blue Jays faithful the stadium will forever be known as the SKYDOME and nothing else. So in honor of this massive monstrosity of concrete and steel, I present a section I would like to call DOMERS.

The term DOMER refers to stand-out Jays fans hidden amongst the Yankee faithful (on any given night there are equal or even more fans for the opposing team).

So I present to you a couple 2009 Home-Opener DOMERS:

The First Post

After nearly a nine year absence from the card collecting community I am back, and I am going to pick up where I left off, collecting my all time favorite team the Toronto Blue Jays (as well as whatever sets tickle my fancy).

I started off small just buying a cheap box of 2009 Upper Deck First Edition, and I am impressed with the Blue Birds in this set, although none of them found their way into the insert set.
